Choose the right phone charger

Check the connector, charging protocol, output and cable before buying a charger for your phone.

Start with your phone’s requirements

Check your exact phone model and the manufacturer’s charging specifications. A USB-C port describes the connector; it does not, by itself, promise a particular charging speed or charging protocol.

Match the charger and the cable

Check that your phone, charger and cable support the charging method you want to use. USB Power Delivery (PD) and features such as PPS need support across the relevant devices. Check the product specification instead of relying only on “fast charging” in a title.

The cable needs the correct connectors and a sufficient power rating. A charging cable’s data-transfer speed is a separate specification. Read the manufacturer’s requirements if you also use the cable for a laptop or display.

Compare output per port

A charger’s headline wattage may be its total output. On a multi-port charger, check the output available to each port and how it changes when several devices are connected. Your phone’s supported charging rate also limits the speed it can use.

Before you order

  • Confirm your exact device model and connector.
  • Check the supported charging protocol and power requirements.
  • Check whether a suitable cable is included.
  • Check the plug type and whether you need an adapter.
